Piano concert to raise funds for Moya Cole Hospice

A piano concert on behalf of Moya Cole Hospice will be taking place at Cheadle Hulme School this Sunday.

The concert is being organised by Jim Pendrill and his son Sam, and Philip Underwood.

This is the second year that the trio have organised a concert at the School after an event was held last year in memory of Jim’s sister Suzanne Karn.

Suzanne spent the last few weeks of her life in Little Hulton before she died at home in September last year, aged 43.

“Philip, Sam and I have done piano concerts together before,” Jim said. “Last year we decided it would be fitting to hold a concert in memory of Suzanne and raise funds for the hospice at the same time.

Coming up to the anniversary of Suzanne’s death, we decided to mark the occasion with another concert, especially as the event was so well attended last year. Also, it would have been Suzanne’s 45th birthday this Monday, the 20th, so having the concert the day before is another way to remember her

Jim Pendrill, Moya Cole Hospice Supporter

According to Jim there is something for everyone who attends the concert.

“It’s not just a classical concert, there’s a range. Philip and I have been playing together for quite a few years and tend to play a range of classical and jazz pieces. Sam, who is a student at the Royal Northern College of Music, also sings and plays a wide variety of music including popular. This year I will also be playing a selection of solo piano pieces from Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals.”

The piano concert will take place this Sunday, October 19th at 2pm at Cheadle Hulme School, with refreshments afterwards.

Admission to the concert is free. For more information, contact Jim at jimpendrill@gmail.com

Tour de Manc raises over £13,000 for Moya Cole Hospice

The team at Tour de Manc have presented Moya Cole Hospice with a £6,132 donation, bringing the total raised from the event, including sponsorship, to £13,633.

Moya Cole Hospice was one of the event’s charity partners, having been supported by the event for the past four years.

The 2025 event raised funds for the new hospice appeal and thanks to the support of Tour de Manc and all our riders, the construction of our new hospice in Heald Green is almost complete with the building due to open in 2026.

Moya Cole Hospice had 22 riders take part this year, including a team from Express Solicitors.

Tony Rubins, Co-Founder and Co-organiser of Tour de Manc, commented.

I thoroughly enjoy speaking to the riders who finish and give them their medals – it really is a joy. Although, I don’t think the best part is on the day; for me that’s handing over the money to the charities we have supported, knowing it will be put towards vital projects that will support those in need.

Tony Rubins, Co-Founder and Co-organiser, Tour de Manc

Tour de Manc has also just launched the 2026 event, which will take place on May 3rd.

Moya Cole Hospice launches 2025 Light up a Life appeal

Moya Cole Hospice has launched its annual Light up a Life appeal, which remembers loved ones through six beautiful, in-person ceremonies.

The appeal also raises much-needed funds for the hospice. The Light up a Life services will be held from the 7th to the 11th of December.

There is also the opportunity to dedicate a light to someone in our online Winter Forest, while making an invaluable donation to Moya Cole Hospice, and have their name recorded in the 2025 Book of Honour.

By joining the appeal, you can make a difference and help Moya Cole Hospice to continue to provide free care and support to those with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones.

Dedications can be made online in the Winter Forest, by phoning the Fundraising Team on 0161 498 3631, or via the form in our Light up a Life leaflet, which is available from our hospice and shops.

When you dedicate a light online, you will be able to choose which service you would like to attend and how many places you would like. This year’s services are an opportunity to come together in reflection and celebration of the lives of loved ones.

Steph Derbyshire is remembering her son, Nicholas who died at the Little Hulton hospice in 2022.

I will always remember how bright and homely the hospice felt when Nicholas went in. Nothing was too much trouble. I’ve been to a Light up a Life service before and for me, it’s all about giving back. I support the appeal because Moya Cole Hospice does such incredible work

Steph Derbyshire, Moya Cole Hospice Supporter

The services will include songs from the choir, words from those in the hospice community, carols, a poem and the lighting of the tree. There will also be a moment of reflection where you can place a decoration on the tree in memory of your loved one.

Siblings, Isabella and Louis to run the Manchester Half Marathon in memory of their dad, Justin

Isabella and her brother Louis are running the Manchester Half Marathon in aid of Moya Cole Hospice.

Isabella and Louis have so far raised over £2,400 for Moya Cole Hospice through their fundraising efforts.

“I only got into running last year. I first did the AJ Bell 10k, so it went from there,” Isabella said.

Louis and his dad, Justin (above).

“My brother’s just recently gotten into running as well so we thought it would be a good idea to do it together,” she added.

Isabella said she has been a supporter of the hospice since her dad, Justin died in 2011.

Isabella and her dad, Justin (above).

“Whenever I have done fundraisers in the past it has always been for the hospice,” she said.

As awful of a time that was, I still have nice memories because of the staff that were there at the time. I was really young so it’s always been quite a special place to me.

Isabella, Moya Cole Hospice Supporter

According to Isabella £2,000 of their fundraising income was on behalf of their mum’s place of work, DCB Legal, who also shared the fundraiser on their platforms.

“They were a massive help and a massive sponsor for us,” she said.

It has been a busy few weeks for Isabella as she recently got married in Las Vegas. She didn’t let the occasion get in the way of her training, however.

We went to Los Angeles after the wedding and I knew by my running app that I needed to run while I was away so I packed my running shoes and ran around Hollywood which was quite nice!

Isabella, Moya Cole Hospice Supporter

Isabella and Louis will be running in the Manchester Half Marathon this Sunday, October 12, where the Moya Cole Hospice team will be out in force to cheer them and our other runners on!

You can donate to Isabella and Louis’s cause by visiting their Just Giving page.

Local author Becky Fleetwood hosts book signing in aid of Moya Cole Hospice

Local author, Becky Fleetwood, ran a charity book signing event at the new Waterstones in John Lewis, Cheadle, on Saturday, October 4th, in support of Moya Cole Hospice.

Becky donated £2 to the hospice for every copy sold of her new novel, Dancing Fools and All That Jazz. The 68-year-old Cheadle resident also had collection tins and online donation links for those just browsing. Over £60 was raised at the event.

The event was, forgive the pun, a novel way to raise funds for the hospice. I wore a volunteer t-shirt so everyone could see the new name and had many conversations with shoppers about the rebranding and the work of the hospice. People were so supportive and happy to give to this brilliant cause

Becky Fleetwood, Author and Moya Cole Hospice Supporter

Becky has left a few signed copies in store if you missed the event. She has also donated a copy to the Moya Cole Hospice library.

Becky has lived in the Cheadle area for over 40 years where she and her husband, Julian, raised their four children, and is now a granny to six girls. Becky has been a long-term volunteer most of her adult life. She used to run a cub pack and still runs a lively toddler group and a foodbank.

Her upbeat commercial fiction was inspired by her own Cheadle dance troupe – an eclectic mix of mature ladies. The fictional group heads to Paris for the finals of an amateur dance competition but they are carrying more baggage than just their costumes. Described as “magically heartwarming”, “sharp and engaging with a wonderful balance of humour, wit, and emotional depth” and “pacy and upfliting”, St Ann’s – as it was then – gets a mention in the book which is set against the backdrop of Cheadle and Paris.

When asked to sum up the novel, Becky says: “Think Calendar Girls meets Stepping Out – with Jazz Hands.”

Becky is delighted to have supported Moya Cole Hospice, is currently writing the follow up book.
