Coffee morning raises over £300 for Moya Cole Hospice

A coffee morning was held in Worsley Village Library last week, raising over £300 for Moya Cole Hospice.

The Worsley Village Community Association (VCA) offered tea/coffee and a cake for £3 or a donation of the buyer’s choosing.

Fundraising and ambassador volunteer at the hospice, Rekha Senapati, said it was wonderful seeing everyone who turned up to the event.

“The Worsley Village Community Association came to me this year and told me they wanted to raise money for the hospice,” Rekha said.

It was a wonderful event, they had lots of different cakes and sweet treats to choose from and they ended up raising £313 for the hospice

Rekha Senapati, Fundraising and Ambassador Volunteer

“They also held a raffle, and overall the event went very well,” she added.

Community Fundraiser for Moya Cole Hospice, George Bartram said events such as the Worsley VCA coffee morning are the beating heart of fundraising for the hospice.

Moya Cole Hospice would not be able to provide care to those with life-limiting illnesses without communities coming together to deliver events such as this coffee morning. We at Moya Cole Hospice are so thankful for their generosity

Samantha to run 100 miles in memory of two friends

A supporter of St Ann’s will be pushing her limits as she takes on a 100-mile run in memory of two friends who died in the care of the hospice.

Samantha Morris is currently training for the Cheshire Ring Ultra 100, a GB Ultras Event, taking place on September 27th.

The event takes place along six different canals, starting and finishing in Media City. She will have 30 hours to complete the event, meaning she will be running throughout the night.

“In June this year, I lot my wonderful friend, Michelle,” Samantha said. “She had fought it on and off for over 20 years.”

Michelle was not just a friend, she was family and also godmother to my son. We had so many laughs over the years, but she was there when I went through tough times, and it was my turn to be there for her

Samantha Morris, St Ann’s Hospice Supporter

“For the last six weeks of her life, Michelle was in the care of St Ann’s Hospice. They go over and above in their care and kindness and attentiveness. Nothing was too much trouble. I watched them do their utmost to make Michelle’s last weeks the most comfortable and pain-free.”

Samantha continued: “We also lost my wonderful friend Bob, my best friend Chris’s husband. I miss his cheeky smile, twinkling blue eyes and wicked sense of humour. Bob too, was taken care of by St Ann’s Hospice.”

As part of the Cheshire Ring Ultra 100 challenge, there are 11 checkpoints. There is a time limit to reach each checkpoint.

“I will have to overcome a fear of running in the dark, which is another challenge in itself,” Samantha said.

I will be thinking of Michelle and Bob every single step of the way, and knowing those two, they will be pushing me on saying you can do this, along with all my other loved ones who have passed and are guiding me on in spirit

Samantha Morris, St Ann’s Hospice Supporter

“One hundred miles is Manchester to Birmingham or to Blackpool and back. It’s a bit of a way, but I want to push myself just as I did when I did ten marathons in ten days, to not just do it for myself but to show others that anything is possible if you really want to do it.

“Please donate what you can. Every single penny means the world to this wonderful charity and me,” she added.

The above timeline is a mere selection of fundraisers and donations towards the Build it Together appeal. It would be impossible to include every single donation or fundraiser to the hospice as the way in which the community got behind the appeal is beyond overwhelming to say the least. The team at the hospice thanks every single person who contributed to the appeal since its inception.

The Build it Together Appeal has reached its £2m goal!

The St Ann’s Hospice Build it Together appeal has officially hit its £2m target!

The Build it Together appeal was launched in June 2022 and is a public appeal to raise funds for the new hospice building located in Heald Green.

Construction started on the new building in June 2023 and is nearing completion with the aim of opening the hospice doors in the early new year.

Head of Fundraising and Captial Campaign at St Ann’s Hospice, Anne-Marie Wynne says she has been overwhelmed by the support of the public.

“We knew the goal we set of £2m in June 2022 was a huge ask but the way in which local communities have gotten behind the Build it Together appeal from the very beginning has been amazing.”

Individuals and community groups right across the region have worked so hard to raise funds towards our new hospice building and look how far we have come. We have reached the £2m goal. Watching the development of the building on the land next to the current hospice over the last 18 months and seeing how close we are to completion is incredible and we would not be where we are today without the kindness and generosity of those within the St Ann’s community

Anne-Marie Wynne, Head of Fundraising and Captial Campaign

Now that the Build it Together appeal has been reached it does not mean we are finished fundraising for the new build.

The Name on the Wall and Sponsor a Bedroom initiatives are still active. The Name on the Wall campaign asks those within the community to donate £1,000 for their name to be placed on our wall in the new hospice. This £1,000 is accumulative across all donations towards the new build. The Sponsor a Bedroom appeal asks for £50,000 for the furnishing and kitting out of one of our patient bedrooms within the new hospice.

Donate the cost of a match day pint to help your team win the Manchester Donation Derby

City host United in the first Manchester derby of the 2025-26 Premier League season on Sunday, September 14. The same day, St Ann’s Hospice will host the Manchester Donation Derby, giving fans of both teams the opportunity to claim the title of ‘most charitable’.

We’re asking City and United fans to donate the price of a match day pint to your team’s page in aid of our Build it Together appeal for a much-needed new hospice in Heald Green, Stockport.

The funds will be going towards the new gardens that surround the hospice. Our aim for the gardens is simple, we want to tap into the powers of nature that have been proven to promote peace and calm. A hospice garden can provide a quiet, peaceful place away from clinical settings, reducing stress and anxiety.

Every pound we raise is still vital to ensure that we complete the hospice and are able to welcome our new patients. Thank you for helping to ensure that the hospice is here for everyone in the future.

We’re excited to host another Donation Derby, and calling for all United and City fans to get involved. We’re looking to see who will come out on top on the pitch and we’re looking forward to seeing which team will fund the most towards the new hospice gardens!

Anne-Marie Wynne, Head of Fundraising and Capital Campaign at St Ann’s Hospice

If you’re not a fan of either team but still want to get involved and help to build the new hospice, you can! You can donate to the overall campaign on JustGiving instead of the team pages for City and United.

Barbara (87) to complete final competitive run

Barbara Thackray’s support for St Ann’s Hospice has no end. For decades, she has tirelessly fundraised for the hospice. Ten years ago when she turned 77,  she took on her first competitive run. Since then, Barbara has raised over £30,000 for St Ann’s.

This September marks Barbara’s final race where she will be raising funds for St Ann’s, she is 87 after all and her weekly routine has consisted of running two 10ks a week, and she now feels it is time for her to slow down and pace herself.

Barbara will be running the Altrincham 10k this Sunday, September 7, and we at St Ann’s are gearing up support for what will be her final run.

St Ann’s staff, volunteers and supporters will be lining the streets during the Altrincham 10k to cheer Barbara on during her final race.

Barbara’s niece, Helen spoke about her aunt’s achievements and has along with her husband committed to matching the total raised by Barbara during her final run.

Barbara has been an inspiration to all of our family with her drive to support St Ann’s Hospice. I am so proud of her for the impact she’s had and the visibility she’s brought for St Ann’s – extending as far as to our family in the US. My husband Larry and I have pledged to match the total she raises in this 10K race, and we will be cheering for her as she runs!

Janet says the Walk 100 Miles in September challenge is a ‘great way of keeping active’

Janet O’Keefe says she took on the Walk 100 Miles in September challenge as she wanted to support St Ann’s Hospice.

Janet completed her 100 miles within three weeks and luckily enough she did as she came down with COVID the day after she reached the milestone and was not able to walk much for some time afterwards.

“My mum who had cancer and lived with me got a great deal of enjoyment out of going to St Ann’s because they used to pick her up on a weekly basis to do activities,” Janet said.

When I saw the challenge, I just thought, well, they gave my mum a lot of benefits and I think of her every time I walk past the hospice and I felt it would keep me motivated to carry on walking if I put it out there that I’m doing this for St Ann’s

Janet O’Keefe, St Ann’s Hospice Supporter

According to Janet, she felt great doing the challenge as it encouraged her to go out on days when she didn’t even want to go out.

“I felt that I couldn’t let the charity down and I had to stick to what I promised, it was a great way of keeping active,” she said.

Janet raised over £1,250 for St Ann’s from sponsorship of her 100 Mile challenge.

“I got a lot of financial support from friends, family, and work. My employers even put in a big chunk,” Janet said.

“I didn’t have to prod anybody as I’ve a wide network of friends, and support in work. It wasn’t difficult.

“St Ann’s gives support to people with life-limiting illnesses, but it also helps the families as well. I remember when my mum went there, she was so buoyant when she got home because of everything they provided for her, and the companionship. It also helped me. It benefits everybody, not just the person who is sick,” Janet added.

This year’s Walk 100 Miles in September is only a few weeks away but there is still plenty of time to sign up. Do you think you are up for the challenge of walking 100 miles in a month?

The Build it Together appeal was launched in June 2022 and is a public appeal to raise funds for the new hospice building located in Heald Green.

St Ann’s are encouraging those who can to rally round and help them across the finish line.

Head of Fundraising and Captial Campaign at St Ann’s Hospice, Anne-Marie Wynne says she has been overwhelmed by the support of the public.

“We knew the goal we set of £2m in June 2022 was a huge ask but the way in which local communities have gotten behind the Build it Together appeal from the very beginning has been amazing.

Individuals and community groups right across the region have worked so hard to raise funds towards our new hospice building and look how far we have come. Anne-Marie Wynne, Head of Fundraising and Capital Campaign at St Ann’s Hospice

“We are so close to the finish line, and now all that’s left to do is raise the final £100k!” Anne-Marie said.

There have been hundreds of fundraisers towards the Build it Together appeal over the last three years. From Quiz Nights, Golf Days, Theatre Shows, Discos, Summer Fairs, Open Gardens, giving up alcohol and giving up coffee, walking, running, dancing and singing, as well as hundreds of cash donations – the support of the community has been humbling.
