Job Summary

We’re looking for a motivated Complementary Therapist to join our cross‑site Rehabilitation Team, delivering therapies that support patients living with life limiting illnesses, and their carers and families, across our Heald Green and Little Hulton sites. You will be a committed and professional Complementary Therapist who is able to work both independently and as part of a team, bringing compassion, adaptability and a proactive approach to supporting patients and families.

The Role

As an important member of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team, you will provide safe, effective complementary therapies that place each person’s individual concerns, goals, beliefs and culture at the centre of care.

The Complementary Therapist will:

  • Assess patients, support the development therapy plans and record accurate clinical notes.
  • Adapt therapies to meet individual needs and work within your competency, seeking support from senior staff where appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure patients’ needs are met.
  • Support the management of referrals and the allocation of complementary therapy sessions.
  • Support the complementary therapy caseload across both sites to ensure timely reviews.
  • Provide informal support and training to volunteer therapists and contribute to hospice training.
  • Support safe storage and stock management of therapy resources.
  • Adhere to hospice policies and participate in ongoing professional development.

Requirements

The Complementary Therapist will have:

Essential: 

  • Be qualified to safely and competently deliver complementary therapies used at the hospice to include the following: Reflexology, Indian Head Massage/Massage, and Aromatherapy level 3.
  • The successful candidate would be required and supported to achieve reiki training to level 2 if not already achieved within the first year of employment.
  • Hold qualifications as recognised by: Aromatherapy Regulation Working Group e.g. IFPA, ITEC, The Vocational Training Charitable Trust, The Reflexology Forum e.g. AOR, BRA and The British Association of Massage Therapy, Reiki-1st and 2nd
  • Demonstrate relevant post qualification experience
  • Provide patient centred care that recognises a person’s individual concerns, goals, beliefs and culture.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of multi-disciplinary team working.
  • Demonstrate effective oral, written communication and IT skills
  • Deliver presentations/training internally and externally with support from senior therapist to enable staff to develop their knowledge of complementary therapy.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effectively manage their time and cross-site caseloads.
  • Support with induction, and informal support of volunteers to deliver safe and effective complementary therapies, with support from senior therapist
  • Understand the effects of a range of life limiting conditions and their treatments and the implications when delivering complementary therapies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use a variety of strategies to engage in skilled, compassionate, individualised and timely therapies with patients and their carers: and evaluate the effectiveness of these, seeking support from senior therapist as required
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of complementary therapy in palliative care.
  • Participate in quality improvement, audit and service improvement to ensure high clinical standards in conjunction with senior therapist
  • Travel between the two hospice sites.
  • Identify own development needs and show evidence of continued professional development.

Desirable:

  • Has completed relevant courses applicable to palliative care.
  • Has experience of working with people with life limiting conditions.
  • Has experience of working with volunteers
  • Is a member of a special interest group
  • Is trained to the level of Reiki level 2.

The successful candidate will be subject to a DBS Check at the level appropriate to the role, the cost of which is covered by the hospice. Any post holder within the organisation will be expected to undertake safeguarding training appropriate to their role and adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures. All staff must work in accordance with their statutory roles and responsibilities in relation to safeguarding in accordance with the Working Together to Safeguarding Children 2023, The Care Act 2014, and Prevent Duty 2015.
