An insight into the life of Ian “Spider” Mellor

Supporter event: An insight into the career of one of Sale’s sporting heroes Ian Mellor will be shared at Sale Sports Club on Clarendon Crescent on Friday, October 18, from 7.00 pm.

Ian played for his boyhood idols Manchester City in the 1970s against legends like George Best, Bobby Moore, Billy Bremner, Sir Geoff Hurst and Kevin Keegan.

The Mellor family have a rare claim to fame – Ian’s son Neil followed in his dad’s footsteps by playing at the top level for Liverpool.

Neil and other family members will be there to share stories about Ian, who died of a rare disease in May, aged 74.

Known as Spider due to his lanky legs, Ian was so embarrassed by his physique that he skipped lessons to avoid playing for his school team in front of spectators.

Ian’s autobiography Spider was published days before he died in St Ann’s Hospice. The book costs £10 and all proceeds are donated to the charity which is building a new hospice adjoining its current Heald Green site.

The Mellor family are hoping to raise enough funds to have a bedroom named in Ian’s memory.

St Ann’s Sale & Altrincham Volunteer Fundraising Group Recruitment Gathering

The gathering is to introduce ourselves to potential members of the new fundraising group, them to meet each other, tell them about the hospice, and there will be two members of the HG fair committee there to explain how they set up their events and what they have gained from being a fundraising volunteer for St Ann’s.

Being a member of the Sale and Altrincham volunteer fundraising group will only require a few hours of volunteering each month and is a flexible way to contribute towards raising awareness and funds for St Ann’s.

The members will meet in their local area wherever and whenever best suits them and they get full control over which fundraising events they would like to put on. Some examples include facilitating a toddler’s toddle, bake sale, a fair, a comedy night… It could be anything!

Light up a Life service – St Peter’s Church, Hale

Join our service of remembrance at St Peter’s Church, Hale. The Light up a Life services are an opportunity to come together in reflection and celebration of the lives of loved ones. We would be delighted if you could join us.

Light up a Life

You’re invited to join our Light up a Life appeal and dedicate a light to remember your loved one. Make a dedication online by adding a light to our Winter Forest, along with a photo, message or memory, and you’ll be able to share your dedication with friends and family online. You can also dedicate a light anonymously if you wish.

When you dedicate a light online, you will be able to choose which service you would like to attend and how many places you would like.

The services

The service at St Peter’s Church will be held by our hospice Chaplain. The services will include songs from the choir, words from those in the St Ann’s community, carols, a poem and the lighting of the tree. There will also be a moment of reflection where you can place a decoration on the tree in memory of your loved one.

All Light up a Life dedications received by Friday 22nd November will be recorded in the 2024 Book of Honour, which will be on display at all the services, as well as at both of our hospices next year.

Date and time

Wednesday 4th December, 7pm

Location

St Peter’s Church, 233 Ashley Rd, Hale, Altrincham WA15 9SS

Get in touch

If you have any questions about the Light up a Life appeal, services or your dedication, please contact our Fundraising Team on 0161 498 3631 or supporter@sah.org.uk.
