Job Summary

As Shop Manager at our Little Hulton charity shop, you will play a key role in transforming donated goods into vital funds that help Moya Cole Hospice provide compassionate care and support to local people and their families. You will have the opportunity to lead a valued community retail outlet, inspire a team of colleagues and volunteers, and use your retail skills to grow income, build relationships and make a lasting impact. This is a hands-on retail leadership role where you will combine excellent customer service with commercial thinking to maximise income and make the most of every donation. You will drive sales performance, work towards targets, recruit and inspire a team of volunteers, deliver high standards of merchandising, identify items for online sales and use retail systems and performance data to continually improve results.

You will build strong relationships within the local community, encouraging donations, increasing awareness of Moya Cole Hospice and supporting local promotions and events. Working collaboratively with the wider Retail team, you will play a key role in developing the shop, improving performance and ensuring donated goods generate the greatest possible income.

The Role

The Shop Manager will:

  • Lead and develop the day-to-day operation of the Little Hulton charity shop, creating a welcoming and inspiring environment for customers, volunteers and colleagues.
  • Drive sales and maximise income by using retail knowledge, performance information and creative ideas to improve shop performance and make the most of every donation.
  • Inspire, recruit and support a team of volunteers, helping them to develop their skills and ensuring they feel valued and engaged in supporting the hospice.
  • Create exceptional customer experiences through high standards of merchandising, shop presentation and friendly, professional service.
  • Build relationships within the local community to encourage donations, increase awareness of Moya Cole Hospice and develop opportunities for shop growth.
  • Identify and maximise opportunities for donated stock, including selecting items suitable for online sales and ensuring goods achieve their full potential.
  • Maintain safe, effective and compliant shop operations by following policies, managing risks and ensuring high standards of Health & Safety.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider Retail team to share ideas, deliver improvements and contribute to the continued success of Moya Cole Hospice.

Requirements

The Shop Manager will have:

  • Previous retail, customer service or commercial experience, with an understanding of what makes a successful retail environment.
  • Experience of working towards sales targets and using performance information to identify opportunities and improve results.
  • Strong leadership and people skills, with the ability to motivate, support and develop employees and volunteers.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage positively with customers, colleagues, volunteers and the local community.
  • Commercial awareness and creativity, with the ability to maximise income, recognise the value of donated goods and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and operate effectively in a busy retail environment.
  • Confidence using digital systems and technology, including electronic tills, email, online platforms and basic reporting tools.
  • An understanding of merchandising principles and delivering high standards of shop presentation.
  • Experience handling cash and financial transactions accurately and responsibly.
  • A good standard of education (GCSE level or equivalent) or relevant experience gained within a retail or customer-focused environment.
  • The ability to meet the physical requirements of the role, including moving, sorting and displaying donated stock.
