Receiving the Nursing Times Nurse Leader of the Year Award is an honor I dedicate to everyone involved in hospice care. Leadership in this field transcends nursing, it involves collaborating with healthcare professionals across sectors, engaging communities, and advocating for sustainable care systems. As Director of Clinical & Digital Services at Moya Cole Hospice, Chair of the HUK North West Clinical Leaders Group and Vice Chair of the HUK National Clinical Leaders Group I am proud to contribute to a sector where compassionate leadership shapes not only patient care but also the policies and strategies that secure our future.

Leading Multidisciplinary Teams in Hospice Care

Hospice care is inherently collaborative, requiring the expertise of diverse professionals. My leadership extends to guiding nurses, physicians, social workers, allied health professionals, and volunteers to provide holistic, dignified care to patients and families. By fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared goals, we ensure seamless, patient-centered care even during life’s most challenging moments.

Shaping the Future of Hospice Care

Strong leadership is vital to addressing the pressing challenges facing hospices. Across the UK, funding shortfalls threaten the ability of hospices to meet rising demand for palliative and end-of-life care. Despite providing essential services to over 300,000 people annually, hospices receive only about a third of their funding from the government, leaving the rest reliant on charitable donations, a model that is increasingly unsustainable.

At Moya Cole Hospice, my role involves advocating for equitable funding policies. This includes working with Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), politicians, and community leaders to address the disparities in hospice funding across regions. Collaborative action is essential to establish multi-year funding models that truly reflect the costs of care delivery, as highlighted by recent reports from Hospice UK.

Engaging Communities and Policymakers

Hospices are integral to their communities, and as a leader, I prioritise aligning our care with local needs. Through partnerships with community organisations, outreach initiatives, and public education, we emphasise the importance of hospice care. Simultaneously, with sector colleagues I work with policymakers at both local and national levels to champion fair funding and greater integration of hospice services within the broader health system.

A critical aspect of this engagement is participating in the ongoing debate about assisted dying. This sensitive and complex issue requires informed, compassionate voices. Nurse leaders in hospice care play a vital role in this conversation by advocating for high-quality palliative and end-of-life care as a meaningful alternative to assisted dying. By promoting understanding and awareness of the profound benefits of hospice care, we contribute to ensuring that all individuals receive dignified and comprehensive support at the end of life.

These efforts collectively aim to secure sustainable, equitable, and compassionate hospice services for those who need them, regardless of their circumstances.

Inspiring Change Through Leadership

Leadership in hospice care goes beyond administration. It involves mentoring teams, driving innovation, and creating a culture of resilience and adaptability. At Moya Cole Hospice, I emphasise professional development, ensuring staff are equipped to meet the evolving complexities of care. This includes addressing the emotional challenges of end-of-life care with professionalism and compassion.

As a clinical leader, I also champion advancements in hospice care, from integrating technology to improve care delivery to expanding access through community outreach. My goal is to ensure that hospice services are not only preserved but also enhanced to meet the needs of future generations.

Looking Ahead

The role of nurse leaders in hospice care will continue to evolve as the sector navigates changing demographics, rising costs, and increasing complexity in care needs. Leadership development must remain a priority, with an emphasis on fostering collaboration, innovation, and advocacy.

My journey at Moya Cole Hospice has deepened my belief in the transformative power of leadership. It is a privilege to be part of a profession that not only delivers care but also inspires change, ensuring that hospices remain a cornerstone of compassionate and effective healthcare.

Through collaboration with healthcare colleagues, policymakers, and communities, I am committed to ensuring that hospices continue to provide dignity, care to all who need it. Together, we can shape a future where hospice care is better funded, accessible, and recognised for its vital role in society.
