Jasmine explains why she is supporting Light up a Life

Jasmine Ryan's mum, Karen was cared for at Moya Cole Hospice

I cared for my mum towards the end of her life for about 18 months. Then, towards the end of her life she deteriorated and was admitted to Moya Cole due to needing 24-hour observation.

I didn’t think anyone would be able to care for her better than me, but the minute she was admitted to Moya Cole Hospice, I was put at ease.

She had glioblastoma, a fast-growing, aggressive, and cancerous brain tumour. The hospice was attentive to her. She was relaxed and comfortable.

When she first arrived, they gave her a shower, she wasn’t able to have one in the hospital because the facilities didn’t suit. She was just so happy once she was clean.

One day, while the sun was shining, we had her in a chair, and we wheeled her outside. She was able to hear the birds and feel the sun on her face.  Jasmine Ryan, Moya Cole Hospice Supporter

The hospice team was incredible with me as well; they always offered me a hot drink. They always kept me updated. It was a lot for me to let someone take over her care, so they allowed me to help care for her in ways, even though I was confident they could care for all her needs.

I never once felt that Mum wasn’t happy or comfortable in the hospice.

It’s important to support Moya Cole Hospice because they care for your family like they’re their own. That is something that is very important for people like me. I’m now an advocate for the hospice; they only receive so much support from the NHS and rely on fundraising to continue giving the care that my mum received.
