The annual Moya Cole Hospice Celebration Event and Chair’s Awards took place this week to honour our tremendous staff and volunteers for their hard work and long service.

The event took place in the Education Suite of Moya Cole Hospice, Heald Green and was hosted by Chief Executive, Rachel McMillan and Chair of the Board of Trustees, Anita Rolfe.

Rachel was on hand to personally welcome and congratulate the staff and volunteers.

This is the highlight of my year. I absolutely love this event because it gives us the opportunity to reflect for a couple of hours and truly celebrate everyone's achievements. Today is all about our staff and volunteers because people matter. That is really important to me, it makes me feel really proud and humbled that I can celebrate your achievements with you Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive, Moya Cole Hospice

Over 40 staff and volunteers were acknowledged during this year’s ceremony including Margaret Thompson who has contributed an incredible 20 years volunteering at the hospice.

“It is wonderful to be recognised after twenty years. I’ve enjoyed every minute of my work here. It’s been exciting, interesting. I’ve learnt lots of things and I’ve met some lovely warm and happy people,” Margaret said.

The two longest serving staff members to receive the award were Sarah Wallace who is the personal assistant to the Executive Team and the Board of Trustees, and Nic Erhardt who is a Ward Sister at the hospice. Both have been working at the hospice for 30 years.

Sarah Wallace said it was lovely to be recognised for 30 years of service.

Rachel said some lovely things. I'm proud to have worked here for 30 years, I've seen some lovely things, I've enjoyed everything and I'm proud of what the hospice has achieved Sarah Wallace, Recognised for 30 years of service

“Today we recognise the colleagues, teams and volunteers who bring our values to life every day. These awards celebrate compassion, innovation, courage, collaboration and dedication,” she said.

Celebration Event
People Matter: This award recognises an individual who consistently puts people at the centre of everything they do.  They treat everyone with kindness and compassion, they value and celebrate diversity; recognising everyone as an individual. This was awarded to Liz Waring, a long-standing role model who provides a warm, compassionate welcome to patients and adapts positively to every change while always putting people first.

Lead and Learn Award: For this award we are seeking someone who is always learning to inform and shape the hospice or hospice sector.  This might be through education, training or research.  They lead by example, share best practice, making advances and pioneering new approaches. This was awarded to Jenn Hughes, who demonstrated commitment to personal development by enhancing her photography skills and applying them to improve key hospice campaigns and events.

Bold and Brave Award: This award recognises the need to grow for the future, not settle.  Those who are not afraid to do things differently, get creative, challenge themselves and the status quo.  The winners were Lisa Berry and Maria Bartley, and Matt Anderton.

Lisa and Maria won for the Bold and Brave Award in recognition of the outstanding commitment, determination and creativity they demonstrated in supporting Trading Company volunteers to complete mandatory eLearning and Information Governance training.

Matt has lived the value bold and brave this year in several ways stepping outside his comfort zone and challenging himself whilst supporting others around him.

Together We Are Stronger Award: This is for an individual or collection of individuals who work collaboratively with supporters, partners or the community.  They have a bigger impact working together than they could do alone.  They think beyond traditional boundaries to make sure we’re here for our communities in years to come. The winner was the Inpatient Unit Multidisciplinary Teams.

Volunteer Special Recognition Award: This award recognises and celebrates the outstanding contribution volunteers make to the hospice. Every day volunteers help us achieve our purpose of providing excellent care. The winner was Imelda Lowe, People & Culture Volunteer. Imelda has played a vital part in both the emotional and practical aspects of our transition to the new hospice building.
