Rekha ‘humbled and honoured’ to receive Mayor’s Citizen Award

Rekha Senapati has been a volunteer at Moya Cole Hospice for 11 years

The Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, Cllr Heather Fletcher, has presented Moya Cole Hospice volunteer, Rekha Senapati with the Mayor’s Citizen Award.  

Rekha says she is humbled and honoured to receive the award.  

“A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and believed in me,” Rekha said.

“I am truly honoured to be receiving this award that acknowledges the work I have done in the Salford community over the last 25 years.”

Rekha has been a volunteer at Moya Cole Hospice for 11 years, initially joining to help out with the flower arrangements in Little Hulton.  

Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, Cllr Heather Fletcher, commented on Rekha’s award on social media.  

“Rekha has dedicated over 25 years voluntary service to people with life-threatening and terminal illnesses especially at Moya Cole Hospice,” she said. 

She has personally raised approximately £50k through organising numerous fundraising events, walking challenges, bucket collections at sports events, and obtaining sponsorship from local businesses Cllr Heather Fletcher, Ceremonial Mayor of Salford

“On top of this, she has promoted cultural awareness of the Hindu community. She is a true legend,” she added.  

Rekha has previously volunteered with many charitable organisations. She began volunteering with the National Deaf Children’s Society, then the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Sure Start, and in 2015 she joined Moya Cole Hospice, undertaking different volunteering roles. She raised £2,000 during Covid times for the hospice, and in February this year, she raised £2000 for three charities, including Moya Cole Hospice. She is one of the core members of the volunteer fundraising committee at the Little Hulton hospice, and over the past few years she has helped in organising the Summer Fair, Winter Fair, Afternoon Teas, and the recent Quizmasters event, which have raised thousands for the Hospice.
